Wirt Lynn Trawick

Wirt Lynn Trawick was born in Tulsa on May 8, 1930, the only child of Lynn McCaskill and Donna May (Bland) Trawick. He passed March 8, 2025, in Stroud, OK at the age of 94.

A life-long resident of Stroud, Oklahoma, Wirt attended Stroud schools where he attained high marks in all subjects and graduated in 1948. He was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, achieving the highest rank of “Eagle” scout. He served as Oklahoma State Christian Youth Fellowship (OCYF) president in 1946. He was also a star football player at left guard on the All-State Tri-County football team his senior year.

He attended Oklahoma A & M College in Stillwater, Oklahoma, graduating in 1952 with a major in General Business and minors in Agricultural Economics and Personnel Administration. At his graduation he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the US Army, having completed four years in the Reserve Officers Training Corps. He went on active duty in the United States Army Ordnance Corps from September 1952 until August 1954. He served in Korea from June 1953 until August 1954. He was promoted to First Lieutenant while in Korea.

After his military service, Wirt continued his cattle ranching with his father who was a heavy equipment operator and independent oil and gas producer in their joint ventures.

He was an avid reader, studying everything carefully, making notes on newspaper and magazine articles, and even equipment manuals.

Wirt loved a good story, and in his later year began writing stories down, many about his childhood antics. His best story was the “Ode to Whitey” about is favorite horse. He shared them with many friends.

He married Carolyn Hope Fairbanks on March 1, 1951. They had three children, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Carolyn passed away on October 12, 1997, being married for over 46 years.

Wirt served Stroud as City Councilman from 1978 to 1989.

The church was the primary influence in his life. He was baptized at age 11 and served many years as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and 32 years as an elder at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Stroud. At retirement, the congregation bestowed the title of “Honorary Elder Emeritus” in October 2000.

Wirt and Virginia Raffety were married on December 27, 1998, and shared twenty years before she passed away on January 10, 2019. They moved into Prairie Pointe Assisted Living in May 2017.

Wirt was preceded in death by his parents L.M. and Donna May Trawick, first wife Carolyn, second wife Virginia, granddaughter Donna Carter, son-in-law Donn A. Martin, and great-grandson Alexander Trawick. He is survived by his children, Lynette Martin of Stroud, Julie (Bill) Burton of Tulsa, Ross (Cheri) Trawick of Spencer, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other family and friends.
