Velma Faye Matheson was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on December 12, 1919 and departed this life in Stroud, Oklahoma on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the age of 98 years. Velma was the daughter of Carl and Stella (Carter) Doughty and was a resident of Kendrick and Davenport for most of her life. She was a person of many talents including being an accomplished artist, pretty good on the harmonica and she could fix nearly anything. Velma loved to fish and particularly enjoyed family trips to Lake Tenkiller and trout fishing tournaments on Blue River, something she did until she approached 80 years of age. Velma began a career in nursing upon graduation from nursing school in 1965 and worked at Stroud Hospital until she retired. She was well respected for her medical skills and served as a mentor for many young people in the profession. Velma married James Edwin Matheson in Kendrick on June 11, 1938. He preceded her in death on August 14, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Elmer Doughty. Velma was a member of the Church of Christ in Stroud. Survivors include, one son Ronnie Matheson and his wife Janet of Kendrick, one daughter Martha Ann Lynn and her husband Steve Lynn of Gun Barrel City, Texas, one brother Kenneth Doughty of Choctaw, one sister Maxine Henshaw of Stroud, seven grandchildren, Clinton Norman, Brenda Dervin and husband Bryan, Jackie Stewart and husband Ben, Lisa Gordon and husband Alfred, Shelly Roney, Sherry Short, and Gary Shackelford, numerous great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ in Stroud on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. with Loren Gieger officiating. Burial will follow in the Davenport Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Stroud.
