Tommee Jean (Cumbie) Long

Tommee Jean Long, 87, entered Heaven’s Gates on September 14, 2014. She belonged to the Prague First United Methodist Church. Tommee was born March 14, 1927, to Ocy Dae Cumbie and Cleda (Hutchens) Cumbie in Wilson, Oklahoma. She went to high school in Vandalia, Illinois and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. She also received her master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. Later, Tommee earned a Reading Specialist Certification. She began her teaching career at Prague Elementary School in 1948. Tommee was the elementary music teacher and later served as principal. She taught in many different ways and places over the years including junior high English, senior high girls’ physical education, and coaching the girls’ basketball team. Tommee taught in the Prague, Norman and Shawnee Public School Systems. At Shawnee, she was the director of reading and supervised labs from kindergarten through high school until she retired. Tommee had many interests and talents besides teaching. She had a lovely voice and sang at many weddings and funerals and also sang the “National Anthem” to begin the Kolache Festival for many years at Prague. She loved to fly airplanes and belonged to a women’s pilot organization called the 89ers. She helped many student organizations by sponsoring the Junior High National Honor Society and the High School Pep Club over the years. Tommee married Bonnie B. Long on December 25, 1946, in Vandalia, IL. She is survived by a daughter, Judy Ann (Long) Winn of Norman, OK and three grandchildren, Mark Darin Winn and wife, Karie, of Blanchard, OK, Shauna R. (Winn) Wagner and husband, Harley, of Martinsburg, WV, and Ashley Ann (Winn) Jarrett and husband, Jay, of Oklahoma City, OK. She is also survived by five great grandchildren, Rebecca and Daniel Winn, William and Wesley Wagner and Carson Jarrett. Tommee was preceded in death by her husband, Bonnie B. Long, her son-in-law, Tommy R. Winn, and her sister, Betty Souther. She loved her family and we loved her. She helped make our lives interesting, even exciting at times with her love, ideas and encouragement. We will miss her deeply. The family has requested that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF), Research Designation: MS Campaign, 825 N.E. 13th, Oklahoma City, OK 73104. Tommee’s family has planned the funeral services for Saturday, September 20, 2014, at 1:00 PM; and the church is providing the family with a meal at 11:00 AM. Both will be at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel, 1405 W. Main, Prague, OK with Rev. Derrek Belase officiating. Interment will follow at Prague Cemetery in Prague.
