On Friday, October 4th, 2019, Theda Buchanan went home at the age of 82. Theda was born on June 10th, 1937, in Bristow, to Olin and Dorothy Haulcomb. After graduating from Depew High School in 1955, Theda moved to Tulsa to attend business school and work. On October 15th, 1964, Theda married Carl Buchanan and the two spent 26 years together before he passed away. After the two were married, they moved to Stroud to raise their five children. The couple became legal guardians of Cathy Buchanan Mitchell after she and Carl’s mother passed away. All six kids graduated from Stroud High School and were members of the First Christian Church. Theda was heavily involved in her kids’ many activities. She served as a den mother and Girl Scout leader. She attended every school play, concert, dance recital, competition and ball game. She also loved attending each of her grandkids’ school activities. Many in the community will remember Theda as the friendly face that greeted them at The Specialty House or at the deli inside of Kinnamon’s. She was the loving bus driver who cared for each of the children on her route. Theda also loved covering classes as a substitute at Stroud Schools. She loved being with the kids. If you were one of the many kids who attended daycare at The Clown House, you became like one of her own. Theda was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Buchanan, her oldest son, Charles Brown, and her parents. She is survived by four kids: David Brown and wife Brenda, Sonja Owens, Shirley Todd and husband Skip, and Rocky Buchanan; seven grandchildren: Jeremy Brown, Jasmine Brown, Ashley Henderson and Jeremy, Summer Nichols and husband Jerry, Kali Owens, Savannah and Sadie Todd; and five great-grandchildren: Lilliana Steel, Julius Webb, Jordan Owens, Titus and Aleah Nichols. Theda is also survived by her three brothers and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at The First Christian Church on Thursday, October 17th at 1:00 pm.
