After an earthly journey of 82 years, 6 months and 22 days, Sylvia L. (Davis) Chambless peacefully entered her eternal rest on Feb. 25, 2010, in McLoud. She was born Aug. 3, 1927 to C. George and Julie Emmaline Davis. With a birth weight exceeding 14 pounds, she earned the title of the largest viable birth in Okfuskee County to that date. She was the 5th of 8 children who grew up in the Prague and Paden communities graduating from Paden High School in 1945. Sylvia married Billy Joe Palmer in 1946. To this union were born five children, George, Glenda, Kathy, Bruce and James. On May 28, 1970, Sylvia married Johnie L. Chambless. She and Johnie enjoyed over 20 years of farming, fishing and grandchildren before his death in 1992. She worked as a cook at McLoud Schools, at General Electric and retired from Tinker AFB. In her retirement she enjoyed traveling to 48 states, flower gardening and birds, especially hummingbirds. Sylvia was a woman of deep Christian principles and faith. She was a member of the McLoud Assembly of God. Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands and two brothers, George J. Davis and Cleo Davis, two sisters, Beatrice Tibbits and Zelma Langton. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, George & Shirley Palmer of McLoud, Bruce and Verna Palmer of Heavener, OK, James and Brenda Palmer of Azle, TX; two daughters and one son-in-law, Glenda and Donnie Kuhn and Kathy Harris of McLoud; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and 2 sisters-in-law, Cecil and Mary Davis of Paden, Jane Davis of Prague; 2 sisters, Marie Wilkins of Yukon and Clarice Stone of Shawnee; one brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Jessie & Virgie Palmer of McLoud; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Services will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, March 1, 2010, at the McLoud Pentecostal Holiness Church, with Rev. Jim Duck officiating and assisted by Rev. Danny Webb. Interment will follow at McLoud Riverside Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith~Parks Funeral Service in Harrah, OK.
