At the age of 18, Raymond joined the Navy, where he served for 4 years, seeing active deployment in the Korean War as a machine-gunner on a troop transport. After the war, Raymond returned to Stroud, and married his high school sweetheart, Billie Black, in a double wedding with his older brother Bob, and his wife Joanne, in Arizona, in 1953.
