Ray S. Smith, 60, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, at his home in Meeker after a 9-year battle with cancer. Ray was born on January 16, 1944, to Dee and Alta Marquis Smith in Wewoka, Oklahoma. He attended Meeker schools. Ray married Gayla Fowler on May 24, 1971, in Gainesville, Texas. He attended and was baptized at the Meeker Assembly of God Church. Over the years, Ray worked for Irwin?s Bridge and various other construction companies. For the last 20 years, he owned and operated Smith Crane and Backhoe Service, working mostly in Pottawatomie County. His parents and father-in-law, Elvis Fowler, preceded Ray in death. Survivors include his wife, Gayla; daughters, Rachelle Smith and Raye Dawn Smith; and granddaughter, Kelsey, all of the home; daughter,Janet Jackson of McLoud; sons and daughters-in-law; Danny Smith of Prague, Tommy and Darla Smith of Woodward, Curtis and Miste Smith of Wilburton; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Cheryl Smith of Meeker; mother-in-law, Mildred Fowler of Meeker; brothers-in-law and spouse, Darrell Fowler of Meeker, Ronnie and Jacque Fowler of Fordyce, AR; grandchildren, Justin Abbott, Whitney Jackson, Taylor Brown, Merissa Smith, Sierra Smith, Jaci Smith, Garrett Oldham, Kermit Parsons, and C.J. Parsons; and great-grandson, Trayce Abbott.
