Onan Hill was born in Seminole County, Oklahoma, on March 31, 1921. He was the 5th and last child of John Samuel Hill and Josephine (Ramsey) Hill. Onan was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters and one brother. He was a veteran of WWII, serving 4 years on active duty and an additional sixteen years in the Reserve. He was a Navigator in the ETO, flying his last combat mission on December 26, 1944. He took pride in the fact that he navigated aircraft in both directions across the Atlantic and the Pacific. For the most part, he flew in B17s, B24s and C54s. He used every day of his four years of eligibility from the GI Bill and earned three college degrees and taught school for 31 years. He married Wanda Lea Bound on June 5, 1948. They had 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl and had 67 plus wonderful years together. Onan was a member of a number of Southern Baptist churches, serving in many capacities. He was a deacon and sang in the choir for more than 55 years, until, in his own words. 'I gradually lost 3 or 4 notes on the bottom of my range and my voice insulted my own ears. After that, I just made a joyful noise, but from the congregation.' After retirement, he read avidly, traveled, did genealogical research, wrote lots of letters, and gardened. He was absolutely convinced that gardening, or digging in dirt, as he said, was the best mental therapy in the world, and in addition, the effort produced vegetables. In his own words, 'I had a wonderful life and certainly knew a lot of great people and married the nicest person ever met.' Survivors include his spouse, Wanda L. (Bound) Hill, three sons: John Adrian Hill, of Silver Spring, Maryland; James Trent Hill, of Eagle Lake, Florida; Jay Warren Hill, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and one daughter, Ila Jane (Hill) Fitzgearld of Forest Grove, Oregon, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Fellowship Community Church, meeting at the Forest Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church (1950 Mountain View Lane) at 3:00 pm on Friday, August 28, 2015. Pastor Jason Rioux will be presiding over the service. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, August 31, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Little Cemetery in Seminole, Oklahoma.
