Mary Hall (Mayes) Powers, formerly of Chandler, Oklahoma and wife of the late Judge Donald E. Powers, passed away peacefully on the morning of August 11, 2011, at Epworth Villa in Oklahoma City. She and her husband had resided at Epworth Villa since September of 1990. Mary was a retired school teacher after thirty-two years in the classroom. Her teaching career began at Cooper, a one-room schoolhouse in rural Kay County, Oklahoma, later teaching at Pryor, Oklahoma, Davenport, Oklahoma, Hillcrest Heights, Maryland, Agra, Oklahoma and finishing with twenty-five years in Chandler Public Schools. She was a graduate of Ponca City High School, Tonkawa Junior College, Central State College (UCO), and obtained her Master’s degree from Oklahoma State University. Mary was a long-time member of the Chandler United Methodist Church and later Quail Springs United Methodist Church upon moving to Oklahoma City. The highlights of her years were the times spent with her children, grand children and especially great-grand children. Born on July 22, 1918, near Chouteau, Oklahoma, Mary was the daughter of the late James Hall Mayes and Sallie Pearl (Cochran) Mayes of Mayes County, Oklahoma. She was very proud of her heritage in the Cherokee Nation. Survivors include sons, Don Jr. and wife Linda of Oklahoma City and James and wife Linda of Oklahoma City, grandson Michael and wife Katy of Norman, Oklahoma, granddaughter Melanie and husband Sam Schwartz of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Great-grand children Peyton, Sophie, Ella, Cole, Harrison, Savanna, Ethan and Baylee, sisters Virginia Martin of Vinita, Oklahoma and Lucille Beasley of San Diego, California and nieces, nephews and friends. In lieu of flowers please give to your favorite charity or the Epworth Villa Benevolent Fund. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 13, 2011, at Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Chandler.
