Mary Carolyn Harbin Hummer

May 31, 1935 — December 3, 2022

Mary Carolyn Harbin Hummer, having been born of goodly parents, George Young Harbin and Velma Opal Davis on 31 May 1935, left this life on 3 December 2022, in Salisbury, NC. She left to go join those parents, George and Opal; brothers, Jimmy and Buddy; other relatives and friends and her beloved kitty cats, Fluffy, Leo, Tigger, Tommy, Fred, Susie, and Meemie, to name a few. She was born north of Chandler, Lincoln County, OK.

Mary attended Chandler schools for her education and upon graduation from high school she attended Central State College in Edmond, OK for two years and then a wanderlust coaxed her to go to the wild blue yonder. She flew as a “glamorous” stewardess for American Airlines for a couple of years.

Then she met Billy Lee Davis (no relation to Opal) married and had two children (the loves of her life), Carolyn Jane Davis Butler and Lee Harbin Davis.

She received a double major degree., Home Economics and Library Science from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. Nestled in the pretty Ozark Mountains. She was gainfully employed in the Bristow, OK. School system for 10 years as the high school librarian.

The Lord doesn’t shut one door unless he opens another one and Mary was convinced whole heartily that’s what He did when He opened a door for her and in walked Paul Hummer, the nicest guy alive. At the time of her death, they had been married 47 years, having married in the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Since husband, Paul, was employed as Academic Dean of Agriculture at Oklahoma State University, Mary changed jobs to Stillwater, OK schools as an elementary school librarian for two years until retirement time came and opened up time to travel. Travels took them all over the world.

Mary wanted everyone to know she had an enjoyable, full life and was grateful for all the wonderful people she met along the way, who were instrumental in making her life what it was.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Paul Hummer of Salisbury, NC; her children, Carolyn Jane Davis Butler and husband David of Show Low, AZ and Mesa AZ, and Lee Harbin Davis of Las Vegas, Nevada; sisters, ImaJean Harbin of Chandler, OK and Neva Chelf of Wewoka, OK; two nephews, John and Jeff Chelf both of Wewoka, OK; three grandchildren, Lindsay Mangum Lowry and husband Ryan of Knoxville, TN, Shelly Mangum Finley and husband Chris of Phoenix, AZ, and David Alan Mangum and wife Kirsten of Phoenix, AZ; four step-children, Lynn Armitas Holman and husband Raymond of Summerville, SC, Bradley Hummer and wife Brenda of Ft. Collins, CO, Julliette Langston and husband Charles of Eagle, Utah and Heidi Tarver and husband Andrew of Salisbury, NC; eight great grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Interment will be in Parkland Cemetery, Parkland, OK next to her father. The gravesite will be dedicated by her stepson, Brad Hummer.
