Luster Mervin Key was born on May 10, 1916 to Roba and Effie Key of rural Chandler Oklahoma. He departed this life at the age of 89 years on August 7, 2005 at the Sedgwick Healthcare Center, Sedgwick, Kansas. He is preceded in death by his wife Grace Anderson Key on April 1 this year; his parents; two brothers, Floyd and Ray; a son, Edward Key; and two grandchildren, Jeremy Key and Kevin Cox. Several infant great-grandchildren also preceded him in death. He is survived by a son and his wife, Wayne and Anita Key of Seattle, WA; a daughter and her husband, Gayle and Eldon Cox of Wichita, Kansas; a daughter-in-law Sharon Key; 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Luster and Grace were married in the Chandler, OK area in 1936 where Luster continued in business through 1942 when he moved his family to Kansas where he studied to enter the pastorate. He, with his father, Roba, brother, Floyd, and others established the Key?s Produce store on Manvel in Chandler in the late 30?s, which became the K&K Store and survives today as Joe Brown Furniture. Luster was a loving husband, father, grandfather, pastor and friend. He and Grace served faithfully as pastors of four Friends Church Congregations in Kansas and most recently, before their retirement, with the Wellston United Methodist Church in Oklahoma. They also served Camp Quaker Haven of Arkansas City, KS. as caretakers of the camp and, while there, started the Arkansas City Friends Church. Luster served Mid-America Yearly Meeting of Friends in many capacities and was especially active on the Mission Board. A great highlight for him was his trip to Africa in the late 1960?s. We found in his pastor?s New Testament a handwritten in his handwriting list of his God-given gifts. His life affirmed that these gifts characterize him well:Prophecy ? declaring truthServing ? desire to meet the practical needs of others Exhortation ? desire to tell others how to apply God?s truth to their daily livesGiving ? desire to use money and personal possessions for God?s work Mercy ?empathizing with others Friendship ? making friends for Jesus? sake Luster was a great outdoorsman and was an avid hunter and fisherman, particularly for Bass and Quail, and many enjoyed sharing in his love of the outdoors. His kids and grandkids were especially eager to spend time with granddad fishing or hunting. The family members especially remember the fish fry dinners at Mother?s table after he had so effortlessly and meticulously filleted each fish. He raised a bountiful garden which he eagerly shared with all. Most of all, Luster loved Jesus and lived his life on His behalf. A memorial has been established in Luster and Grace?s name for a proposed improvement to the Camp Quaker Haven facilities. Made to MAYM, 2018 W. Maple, Wichita, Kansas, 67213.
