Life-long Prague resident Lorraine Sykora departed this life Thursday, February 10, 2011, in Edmond, Oklahoma, at the age of 84. She was born February 19, 1926, in Prague, Oklahoma, the daughter of Frank and Minnie (Duzi) Rubac. Lorraine married Lawrence Sykora on April 22, 1947 upon his return from WWII at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Prague. They owned and operated the Sooner Caf from 1946 to 1955 and Sykora’s Grocery from 1955 to 1980, as well as being involved in many church and civic organizations. Lorraine was an active member of the Prague United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women organization, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the Junior Federated Arts Club and belonged to the ZCBJ Czech Lodge for many years. She was very proud of her Czech heritage and Prague’s annual Kolache Festival. Following their retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling as well as volunteer work for the Prague Historical Society. Lorraine and Lawrence were honored to receive the Prague Chamber of Commerce 2004 Lifetime Achievement Award. They later moved to Edmond in 2005 to be closer to their family. Their grandchildren were a blessing and were always able to brighten their day. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Lawrence Sykora, her parents, and one sister, Bessie Walters. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Rogene and Laird Hughes and their daughters and son-in-law, Nicole and Sean Lynn, and Tiffany Hughes of Edmond; son Ron Sykora of Edmond and daughters and son-in-law, Micah and John Perkins and their two daughters, and Kara Sykora; son and daughter-in-law Rick and Dana Sykora and their children Ashley and Austin Sykora of Edmond. Memorial donations may be made in Lorraine’s name to the Prague Historical Museum, 8601 NBU, Prague, OK 74864. The Sykora family will receive friends on Sunday, February 13, 2011, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 10:30 AM, at the First United Methodist Church in Prague with Rev. Scott Keneda officiating. Interment will follow at the Catholic Cemetery in Prague. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Prague.
