J. L. 'Sarge' Sargent was born on August 22, 1921, in Dekalb, Texas, and departed this life on Friday, April 20, 2012, at the Veteran's Center in Talihina, Oklahoma, at the age of 90. Sarge, the son of John Tipton and Lola Verna (Hubbs) Sargent, was a long-time resident of Paden. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Lucille Cobb on July 14, 1948 in Horatio, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on September 11, 2011. Sarge received a Bachelor's Degree from Southeaster Oklahoma State University and a Master's from Oklahoma State University. Sarge began his career in education as a principal in Muse, Oklahoma where he later became superintendent. Sarge also served as superintendent in Pierce, Leon, and Boswell. He retired from the Paden Schools where he served many years as superintendent and then became the Okfuskee County school superintendent. His parents; two brothers; and grandson, Mickey Meredith, also preceded Sarge in death. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Gene and Lucy Sargent of Broken Bow, Wesley and Carol Sargent of Yadkinville, NC, Eddie Sargent of Paden; 7 grandchildren; 9 Great-grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 2:00 PM, at Denison Cemetery in Idabel, Oklahoma with Bro. Jan W. Lee officiating.
