Gus Hendrix entered this world on November 20, 1925 in Beggs, Oklahoma. He departed on September 1, 2010, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of seven children born to Lillie and Edgar Hendrix. He grew up in the Beggs area and graduated from high school in Bearden, Oklahoma. At the age of 16, he started college at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. His college career was interrupted by a call of duty to the Army Air Corps, but he returned to OU where he lettered in baseball, was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and graduated with a degree in business. He moved to Ardmore after college and went into business for himself, establishing Gus Hendrix Oil Company. He raised his family and ran his business there, remaining in Ardmore until his death. Gus was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, one sister and a son. Survivors include wife,Elizabeth Hendrix of the home; daughter and son-in-law,Linda and Steve Middleton of Edmond; son and daughter-in-law,Sam and Debbie Hendrix of Ardmore; daughter, Lisa Fisher of the home; brother, Sam Hendrix of Edmond; grandchildren, Mathew Middleton of Norman, Ellen Middleton of Edmond, Sammy Hendrix of Miami, FL; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends of all ages. Gus was an avid sports fan and was particularly fond of OU football. He was a season ticket holder for more than 50 years. Most Saturday afternoons in the fall were spent in Norman until he became too ill to attend. He loved to play tennis and was an accomplished golfer. He was a Little League coach when his boys were young. He was a longtime and once-active member of the First United Methodist Church of Ardmore. He was beloved by all of his children’s friends, who especially enjoyed his humor. He loved to visit Colorado in the summers. Gus will be remembered by many in Ardmore as the man who walked early every morning and put people’s newspapers on their doorsteps. However, of all the things he did in his life, he considered his greatest accomplishment being a grandfather. That was his greatest joy. At the request of the family, memorials may be made to: Cross Timbers Hospice 207 C Street Northwest, Ardmore, OK 73401-6216 Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 6, 2010 at 2:00 PM, at Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Prague with Rev. Sharon Capron officiating. Interment will follow at the Prague Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Prague.
