Grant Edward Burget, 69, of Chandler, Oklahoma died on February 26 at his home. He was born July 15,1951 to George and Doris (James) Burget in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Grant grew up in Stroud and Chandler, where he became well known for being one of the fastest kids in the state. His father George was his track and football coach at Stroud High School, helping him win all-state honors in both sports. During Grant’s senior year of high school, he had the opportunity to visit many colleges nationwide and ultimately decided to play football at the University of Oklahoma. During the recruiting process, coaches from all over the nation visited his home while sitting around the kitchen table eating a meal prepared by his mom discussing all the reasons why their son should attend their university. Ultimately, Mama won. Grant played in the backfield alongside his life-long friend “Little” Joe Washington and in 1974 he and his teammates won the National Championship under the legendary coaching of Barry Switzer. Grant graduated from the University of Oklahoma where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. After graduation, Grant was drafted in 1975 to play professional football with the New Orleans Saints. However, due to a heart condition, he was released from play. Grant spent many years of his adulthood as a stockbroker in Oklahoma City,10 years working in the marketing department with Grand River Dam Authority in Vinita, Oklahoma, and most recently he worked at National American Insurance Company in Chandler, Oklahoma. Grant was a volunteer with the Stephen Ministries and a lifelong member of the “O” Club. He served many years as a Rotarian in Oklahoma City, Vinita and Chandler. He loved hunting, watching his children’s sporting events, Colorado Bulldogs, and spending time with his devoted friends. Grant has three daughters - Warner, Madeline, and Grace who are all originally from Oklahoma City. He taught them how to live with passion and tolerance, how to compete, how to ask way too many questions when ordering from a restaurant, how one is never too old to cry during a Hallmark commercial, and most of all, how to keep life from being boring. Grant has one son, Grant William (GW), born with an exceptional ability in athletics, more courage than he will ever need, and a smile worth a million bucks. Grant loved equally and was devoted to all of his children, and that is how we will remember Grant today. To live like Grant is to remember that love, family, and friends are what make a man truly rich. Grant is survived by his four children, Warner, Madeline, Grace and G.W., his brother Barry Burget and wife Suzanne Burget, his sister, Peggy Bollenbach and husband Rick Bollenbach and many nieces and nephews.
