Glen Estes Wheeler

Glen Estes Wheeler was born on October 16, 1923, in Duncan, Oklahoma, and departed this life on Wednesday, October 31, 2007, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the age of 84. Glen, the son of Leonard A. and Weeltia Guest Wheeler, was long-time resident Stroud Oklahoma. At the time of his death, he was living in Oklahoma City. He was a graduate of Duncan High School, The University of Oklahoma with a BA in Journalism, and Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Glen proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He married Billie Joy Pylant in Duncan, Oklahoma on April 3, 1947. Glen moved to Stroud in 1963 and was appointed to the Board of Directors of Stroud National Bank. He held various offices with the bank before becoming president in June 1986. Glen also operated the Wellston branch of Stroud National Bank. During his time in Stroud, he served as president of the Lion?s Club and chairman of the Lion?s Club Housing Committee at the time Cedar Brook Apartments were constructed. Glen was instrumental in the building of the present Stroud Hospital and arranged for Baptist Health Care to operate the hospital. He was the first chairman of the board when the new hospital opened, a position he held for two terms. Glen also served on the State Board of Baptist Health Care in Oklahoma. Glen was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Stroud where he was a deacon and a volunteer at Jacob?s Ladder Foundation. He was treasurer of the Habitat for Humanity and a member of the Stroud School Task Force for Continued Improvement and Growth. Glen was Stroud Citizen of the Year in 1977, Stroud BPW Boss of the Year in 1972, and was an honorary member of the FFA. At the time of his death, Glen was a member of Village Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Glen?s hobbies included gardening and traveling. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Billie of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Kim and Marilyn Wheeler of Stroud; daughter, Gaye Trivitt of Stillwater; five grandchildren and their spouses, Erin and Jim Coleman of Chandler, Lindsay and Ryan Bivin of San Springs, Victor and Helen Wheeler of McAlester, Morgan and Chris Bilyeu of Owasso, Taylor Wheeler of Stillwater; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 10:30 AM, at the First Baptist Church in Stroud with Rev. Jim Bierd and Rev. Burl Mackey officiating. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Stroud.
