Gladys Sherrell, long-time Wellston, Oklahoma, resident was born on November 19, 1900, in Gunther, Texas and departed this life on March 23, 2004, in Chandler, Oklahoma, at the age of 103 years. Gladys, the daughter of James M. and Callie Vaughn Hanshew, came to Oklahoma in a covered wagon when she was 7 years old. As a child she worked in her parent?s cafe in Wellston. Gladys married David Franklin Sherrell in the Chandler Court House on February 19, 1918. They began their life together farming. During World War II, she traveled to Camp Sherman in Ohio to be with her injured husband. While there, she worked as a nurse. Gladys and Dave returned to Wellston after the war where they owned and operated the Dixie Inn Cafe and grocery store. Later in life, Gladys worked as a pastry chef at the Red Bud Restaurant and Tea Room in Oklahoma City. Gladys was a member of the Wellston American Legion Auxiliary Post # 61 for over 50 years. Her 101 birthday was proclaimed the Gladys Sherrell Day in Wellston and she was inducted into the Centenaries club. Gladys enjoyed cooking family dinners, baking, was an avid gardener and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wellston. Her parents, husband, one son, two brothers, three sisters, one granddaughter, one grandson and one great-grandson preceded Gladys in death. Survivors include: One son and daughter-in-law: Douglas & Nelda Sherrell of Jacksonville, FL; One Brother: George Hanshew of Bartlesville, OK; Two sisters: Vonia Walter of the OKC, OK area; Ruth Chestnutt of the OKC, OK area; Ten grandchildren: Larry, Mary Lou, Lynda, Brenda, Beverly, Tammy, Debbie, Doug Jr., Warren Mike and Barbie Ann; 14 Great-grandchildren; 15 Great-great-grandchildren; Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends
