Geneva Gladys McCoy was born on February 20, 1915, in Prague, Oklahoma, and departed this life on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, at the age of 102. Geneva, the daughter of William J. and Arvie Mae Hobbs Thompson, was a resident of Shawnee. Geneva married Virgil Edward McCoy on May 31. 1935. Geneva was a member of Pleasant Home Baptist Church. She joined the Church upon the profession of her faith in Christ when she was twelve years old. She served Pleasant Home in many areas including teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and serving as a Falls Creek sponsor. She was recognized as the church’s oldest living member by the Governor of Oklahoma upon Pleasant Home’s100th anniversary. As a young woman, Geneva helped her grandmother run a hamburger stand near the OBU campus. The rest of her working career she spent working on both her Father’s farm and on the farm she owned with her husband. In her spare time, she liked to crochet and sew, but her favorite activity was to work in the garden and especially with flowers. She had a keen sense of humor and loved to joke. She loved to listen to music with hymns being her favorite. Her parents, husband, Virgil Edward McCoy, son, Gary McCoy, sisters, Verna Dawkins, Wilma Eitel, and Azelee Shima, and an infant brother preceded Geneva in death. Survivors include grandchildren, Gayla and Mike Higgins, Tim and Kim Holt of Fairport, NY; great-grandchildren, Jill and Destry Newman of Shawnee, Dusty Higgins of Oklahoma City, Justin and Bandon Holt of Fairport , NY; great-great grandchildren, Tanner Newman, Ali Newman, Destynee Newman; several nieces and nephews, and many other family and friends. The McCoy family will receive friends on Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague. Memorials may be made in Geneva’s honor Pleasant Home Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 2:00 PM, at Pleasant Home Church in Prague with Nathan Howard officiating. Interment will follow at Prague Cemetery.
