Elsie Odell Summers

Elsie Odell Summers, age 89, of Harrah, OK, was born July 5, 1924, in Carrollton, Texas. She was the daughter of Jeff & Gladys (McCright) King. She left this life on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, in Harrah, OK. Elsie graduated from Friendship High School, Altus, OK, in 1942. She proudly served in the WAVES - Women's Auxiliary Voluntary Emergency Service, an arm of the Navy during WW II. She graduated from Oklahoma City University with a Bachelor of Science degree, with a major in Accounting and a minor in Education. She worked for Coca Cola Bottling Company for several years and then for Miller-Jackson Wholesale Company in downtown Oklahoma City. Elsie married Franklin W. Summers on June 17, 1951, and they moved to Harrah in 1959. In 1973, she opened her own business, Harrah Bookkeeping and Income Tax Service. Elsie was the first woman to be elected to the Harrah City Council, serving from 1975 to 1979 and the first woman Mayor of Harrah. She was the Financial Secretary for Harrah First Baptist Church for 25 years. Elsie was on the Advisory Committee to plan for the Harrah Senior Campus which would include the nursing home, senior housing and senior citizens center. She served many years on the Board of Directors of the Senior Citizens Corporation and was heavily involved in promoting programs for the senior citizens of Harrah. Elsie was a member of Harrah First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Frank, two brothers, Gene & Don King and one sister, Thelma Arney. Survivors include her son, Warren Summers, Harrah, OK and many other relatives and friends. Services will be 2:30 PM, Saturday, December 14, 2013, at the First Baptist Church, Harrah, OK. Interment will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery, Harrah, OK. Services are under the direction of Smith~Parks Funeral Service in Harrah, OK.
