Beatrice Gutierrez was born on Wednesday, August 31, 1921, in Prague, Oklahoma, and departed this life on Thursday, March 1, 2012, in Prague, Oklahoma, at the age of 90. Beatrice, the daughter of James Henry and Ethel Caroline (Parnell) Trammell, was a resident of Prague. She graduated from Centerview High School in 1939. She attended college at East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma, and began her teaching career at Union Point (Possum Trot) near Meeker, Oklahoma and then taught in Kansas until 1945. She moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico to attend Highlands University where she obtained her Master's Degree and where she met her husband, Virgil Gutierrez. Beatrice and Virgil were married May 23, 1947. They moved to Taos, New Mexico and Beatrice began a long career as a beloved educator in Taos where her first job was teaching 5th grade at Taos Elementary School. During the 1960s, Beatrice taught in the Head Start Program. In 1970, she resumed teaching full time (6th grade) at Taos Elementary School. In 1978 Beatrice was assigned the position of assistant principal in grades K-7th and in 1983 she became the special education coordinator of Taos Municipal Schools until she retired in 1983. After retirement, she spent many hours as a volunteer docent at the Kit Carson Museum and Martinez Hacienda in Taos. Beatrice lived in Taos until 2004. After her husband's death, Beatrice moved back to Prague, her childhood home, to be close to her beloved sister, Berneice. Beatrice loved gardening and after her retirement she could usually be found outside, tools in hand, working on her beautiful flower beds filled with irises, phlox, and roses. She also enjoyed baking. Her famous pecan pies were a favorite and much anticipated gift. She adored her grandchildren, whose fondest memories were of visits to their grandmother who allowed them to eat ice cream for breakfast and homemade sugar cookies all day long! Beatrice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Irene, and brother Albert. Survivors include sons, Marcus Gutierrez of Prague, Louis Gutierrez and his wife, Tamar Zimmerman, of Cambridge, MA; daughter, Dr. Kathleen Gutierrez-Roake and her husband Tim Roake of San Carlos, CA; grandchildren, Jason Gutierrez of Sacramento, CA, John Gutierrez of San Francisco, CA, Christopher Gutierrez of Norman, OK, Caitlin Roake of San Carlos, CA, Julie Roake of San Carlos, CA, Caroline Gutierrez of Cambridge, MA, Evelyn Gutierrez of Cambridge, MA; sisters, Berneice Denius of Prague, Loydale Treat of Wenatche, WA, Sharon Kay Gibson of Omaha, NE; brothers:J.H. Trammell of Ada, OK, Bill Trammell of Midwest City, OK. Her family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. A rosary will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012, at 7:30 PM at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Prague. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 10:30 AM, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Prague with Father Price Oswalt officiating. Interment will occur at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico on March 8, 2012.
