Robert “Bob” Dean Gattis was born in Bartlett, Oklahoma to John Mitchell and Mabel Daniels Gattis on February 18, 1931, and was the youngest of 3 children. Bob was raised in Chandler, Oklahoma were he graduated high school in 1949. While in high school he was a member of the state championship track team of 1948. Bob held the state and school record for high hurdles. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He attended Oklahoma A & M on a football scholarship and he held the record for high hurdles. He graduated with a degree in business. Following graduation, Bob joined the Headquarters Company 1/160th Field Artillery Unit in Chandler, OK, and served with them, obtaining the rank of Sergeant Major. Bob was an employee of National American Insurance Company. Bob will be remembered by his friends and family as a proud, quiet, self-reliant man and an excellent dancer. He was an avid participant and spectator of a multitude of sports. In fact, one of his last requests was that his TV be tuned to ESPN. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, 2 siblings, son Robert Gattis Jr., and grandson Jesse Ray Gattis. Surviving relatives include 5 sons; Doc Gattis and Tony Gattis of Edmond, Monty Gattis of OKC, Mitch Gattis of NYC, and Mark Gattis of OKC, and three grandchildren; James Lee, Rife Dean and Caitlin Stewart. Bob passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2010 in Chandler, Oklahoma. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler, Oklahoma with a celebration of life following.
