Josephine Mae Porter

Josephine Mae Hook Porter JoMae was born February 4, 1926 in Goodwell, Oklahoma to Audry Lee Davison Hook and Jess Lee Hook and died August 6, 2008 at the age of 82. Her parents bought a farm near Lycan Colorado in 1927 where JoMae attend a rural school through the third grade. Her father, Jess, was burned in a farming accident and died in Lamar Colorado several days after the accident. In 1936 her mother packed up the family and moved to Alva Oklahoma. JoMae attended Longfellow School grade school through the 6th grade. JoMae was hospitalized at the Oklahoma Crippled Children''s Hospital in Oklahoma City for several months to treat Polio in her left leg, before entering the 7th. grade at Alva High School. In high school she was an active member of the orchestra, the 'Bugetts' pep club and the chorus. She graduated with honors: Oklahoma Honor Society, 1st place Curricular Contest sponsored by NW State College, Alva Oklahoma, including the Biology, Typing and Homemaking awards. She also received the Honorary Scholarship Award awarded by the NW State College Honor Fund. During the summers she worked at Alva Laundry, TG&Y and Southwestern Bell Telephone until she graduated from High School in 1944. She enrolled in college at NW State College in Alva majoring in Biology, and also worked part-time in the registrar''s office. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Sorority, Gamma Gamma Chapter and was elected President of the chapter in 1945. She was also the Toastmistress at the annual banquet and dance. In the summer of 1945 she went to Tahlequah to visit with the Porter Family, which she had met during her stay in the hospital. She had been writing to Dale Porter who was in the army, and went with them to San Antonio Texas during their Christmas vacation to see him. In 1946 Dale was discharged from the service and they married on June 8, 1946 at the preacher''s home in Alva. JoMae and Dale moved to Tahlequah OK where JoMae enrolled in NE State College where she became a member of the Alpha Chi honorary sorority. The next year they visited Ponca City where Dale was hired by Conoco, so they moved to Ponca City for Dale''s work. JoMae worked at Spray Jewelry and in 1951 she began working part-time at Conoco in the Tourade Department before transferring to the Transcription Department as a checker and then as a typist. She then became a full time employee in the Employee Benefits Division until she left in January 1961 to become a full time mother. On April 8, 1958 Dale and JoMae adopted Jerry Dale, her day was consumed with child care and helping on the family farm North of Ponca City. She was active in the Kildare School District as a substitute school teacher and served many years as a local 4-H Leader. She helped the family farm to raise Hampshire and Dorset sheep for many years. She also worked part-time in Newkirk at Albright Title and Trust and later worked as bookkeeper in the family business Llo-Mar mfg co. Marco Sprayers. In later years she traveled with Dale as he attended local and state water board meetings. Josephine ended her yearlong illness with Lymphoma cancer on August 6, 2008 in the Stroud Regional Hospital with her son and granddaughter Nevin at her side. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Dale and Brother Millard Hook. Survivors include her son, Jerry Porter of Chandler, Grandchildren Amanda Porter, Leramy Kizziar, Fabron Porter and Nevin Porter all of Ponca City, 6 great- Grandchildren. Nephew Dale Hook of Perry OK and Niece Loyce Edmondson of Okla. City, OK and her best friend and cousin Imogene Smith of Guymon, her church family from Hartford Avenue Church of Christ and many friends. Services will be Monday August 11, 2008, at 2 pm in Ponca City at the Faith Tabernacle Church, Rev. Don Stanton officiating, burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
